Australia’s worst caravan park

by astridvaagen

It was getting late as we were driving south the other night, and we were looking for a place to stay. There was no free camping in the area, and according to my Australian Camps book Kuttabul Hotel and Caravan Park was the last option unless we wanted to drive another 100 km. The caravan park looked more than slightly shabby, full of old run down caravans with people that looked like they had been living there for quite some time. A bit sceptic we entered the hotel (pub) and asked about a camp site. The owner didn’t even hesitate to offer us to park for free behind the hotel, on one condition; that we had a beer in the bar later. So after dinner and a shower we showed up in the bar for a beer and a chat. Turns out that he had taken over the hotel/pub just a year ago. It was in terrible shape when he took over, and he had spent the last year doing it up. His next project was to take over the caravan park. He said that with the reputation of being the worst in the country it could only get better. (He just had to get rid of all the people that refused to leave first). We ended up getting a free camp site, showers and beer (he refused to let us pay) as well as an inspirational conversations. He was happy just to have someone to tell about his projects to.
